Teaching modalities
Université Laval offers flexible and accessible education! To help you reach your goals, while reconciling your various daily activities, our course offerings rely on several teaching modalities.
Distance learning course (D)
Distance learning courses allow you to study anywhere.
- Courses given in a virtual environment.
- Both synchronous and asynchronous online activities, based on a sequence preestablished by the teacher.
- Supervised exams taking place on-campus, in an off-campus exam site, or in specific cases, in front of a mandated individual.
Comodal (hyflex) course (C)
Courses given in-person are offered synchronously online. You can choose the modality that suits you best.
- Sometimes via timed recordings.
- Supervised exams taking place on-campus, in an off-campus exam site, or in specific cases, in front of a proctor.
Hybrid course (H)
By combining classroom and online activities, the hybrid modality requires less traveling on-campus than in-person courses.
- Courses include sessions taken in classrooms, other sites, or online, whose dates are specified at the beginning of the semester and indicated in the course plan.
- Synchronous or asynchronous online activities, based on a sequence preestablished by the teacher.
- Supervised exams taken solely on-campus.
In-person course (P)
In-person courses are taken in classrooms or other locations. They promote human-to-human interaction with the person in charge of the course, as well as with fellow students.
- Sessions and activities take place in the classroom or in another location.
- Supervised exams take place solely on-campus.
Synchronous activities
Take advantage of regular live courses at a preset time, while enjoying the full benefits of remote learning.
- Live virtual classroom sessions, which can in some cases be viewed later.
- We recommend being present online when the course is given to actively participate in exchanges and discussions.
Asynchronous activities
Plan and adjust your schedule each week, and manage your own work time.
- No physical or virtual presence required.
- Instructional material accessible at all times during the week.
